Position Summary & Responsibilities : Government Affairs Coordinator

The Government Affairs Coordinator is a member of KDOL’s Office of the Secretary based in the Topeka office and is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and coordinating legislative and policy matters that affect the agency, and ensuring timely communication of developments to agency leadership while facilitating the agency’s representation in the policymaking process.

This is a seasonal full-time position, hourly position from November - May 15. The position pays $35.00 per hour and is NOT benefits eligible. You will spend a significant portion of your day at the Capitol complex or at the Agency offices.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Monitor House & Senate Calendars Daily.
  • Track and attend meetings for House and Senate committees on Commerce, Appropriations, Ways and Means, Federal & State Affairs, the Unemployment Compensation Modernization & Improvement Council, and other committees as needed.
  • Track and attend House and Senate sessions, especially when working legislation
  • Track appointments, legislation, and announcements
  • Monitor emerging legislation that may affect KDOL and its operations.
  • Oversee tracking of each bill/regulation pertaining to the labor department.
  • Keep a spreadsheet of legislation that KDOL needs to track
  • Navigate the legislative process with any new or proposed changes to rules and regulations and/or statutes.
  • Attend and provide notes to KDOL leadership from monitored Committees.
  • Work with Chief Financial Officer and KDOL Leadership on fiscal notes and updates on legislation and regulations.
  • Be available for after-hour events: Committee’s running longer, after-hour functions.
  • Work with KDOL leadership and staff to track and prepare for committee meeting presentations and follow-ups.
  • Support constituent services to all stakeholders including the governor’s staff, legislators, congressional staff, labor, business, other elected officials, attorneys, lobbyists, and the public.

The ideal candidate will be ready to hit the ground running to support the Agency during the 2026 legislative session. While no candidate is expected to meet every qualification listed, the successful applicant will demonstrate a strong combination of the following qualifications and attributes:

Legislative Knowledge : Strong understanding of the legislative process, committee structures, bill tracking, and state-level policymaking.

Analytical Skills : Ability to quickly review, summarize, and assess proposed legislation and amendments.

Communication Skills : Clear, concise written and verbal communication for drafting bill summaries, talking points, memos, and updates for leadership and stakeholders.

Relationship Management : Skilled at building and maintaining professional relationships with legislators, staff, agency officials, and advocacy partners.

Organizational Abilities : Capable of managing multiple deadlines, hearings, and meetings simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Research Competence : Proficiency in conducting policy and issue research to inform strategic decision-making.

Attention to Detail : Precision in tracking legislative calendars, committee actions, and floor proceedings.

Advocacy Support : Comfortable coordinating lobbying efforts, preparing materials, and ensuring compliance with lobbying disclosure laws.

Adaptability : Flexible to respond quickly to last-minute schedule changes, amendments, and unexpected developments during session.

Confidentiality & Professionalism : Ability to handle sensitive information discreetly and maintain a professional presence at the Capitol.

Team Player : Works collaboratively with senior government affairs staff, communications, and policy teams to align messaging and strategy.
