About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, social-emotional learning, academic enrichment, and creative expression, MAP creates safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to thrive.

The MAP Filmmaking Studio introduces students to the art and craft of filmmaking. By teaching storytelling, directing, filming, and editing, the program helps students explore their voices and express themselves through cinema.

Role Overview

We are seeking Volunteer Instructors for MAP Filmmaking Studio to teach students the fundamentals of filmmaking, including storytelling, directing, and video production. In this role, you will guide students through hands-on projects where they create short films, documentaries, and digital stories while building creativity, teamwork, and confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate workshops introducing students to the basics of filmmaking, from storyboarding to editing
  • Teach the use of cameras, audio, and editing tools in age-appropriate ways
  • Mentor students through the process of developing, shooting, and editing their own projects
  • Collaborate with teachers and MAP staff to align workshops with classroom needs
  • Encourage teamwork, creativity, and personal expression through film
  • Showcase student projects and support opportunities for community presentations


Qualifications

  • Background or strong interest in filmmaking, media arts, or digital storytelling
  • Passion for teaching, mentorship, and working with youth
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills
  • Ability to explain technical concepts in simple, engaging ways
  • Teaching, tutoring, or workshop facilitation experience (preferred but not required)
  • Commitment to inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, and equity in education


Commitment

  • Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week (lesson prep + delivery)
  • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
  • Hybrid model in-person visits to New York City schools with remote prep and planning
